Project 2 and M1

Started with a new group project, Project 2. The theme of the research is “fringe communication” and the orientation we choose as a group is “family”. We are expected to dive into the later stages of the design process. Design process method is based on the second diamond in the “double diamond”-process. Focus will be on developing potential solutions and delivering solutions.

The first milestone is done, with a mixed feedback. Goals for this milestone was to open up the field research within the area and present potential concepts. 5 rough concepts were presented. Feedback we got was that we were a bit detailed and focused on scenarios connected with solutions rather than presenting a concept with potential problems to explore. No “real” feedback could be given at that point from Johannes or Clint. Some minor technical advice’s were given but other than that, we as a group had to refocus and redo the things from M1 before continuing on.

Key point to think about for next critical session is to assess the time and to divide the most important issues to be brought up. I felt stressed when we did the round and everyone was saying their thing, knowing that there wouldn’t be enough time to discuss and receive feedback from Johannes/Clint. As it is important to give a good brief about the current situation it is equally important to have enough time to discuss the issue and problem that has arised during the iteration. As a solution we as a group will most likely incorporate a short but effective rehearsal before the crit-session. That way no overlapping between what information is presented will happen and overall efficiency will be increased.

This stage of the design process is a recap of the previous course, Methods 1, were we did explore the whole double diamond process. It was a general course with little time to really pay attention to detailed stages of the process. Methods 2 was a deep dive into the “first diamond” of the process. Which I learned much about. Unfortunately as previously said we only focus on the other half of the process. This leaves me naturally with some questions and curiosity about the stage we are in. It is very easy to work after the task or according to brief given but understanding the core parts of the process is important as well.

It is easy to follow the instructions in the project brief and not really think much about the process. Which is a missed opportunity to learn deeper about the later half of the diamond process. As solution to this problem I will read litterateurs in parallel with the group work in order to learn more and enhance the learn-by-doing experience and hopefully it will deepen my understanding of the process. As it comes as no surprise that this design process is important tool for future endeavors, I feel like I have to take this (excellent) opportunity to mix practical work with theoretical, as well as sneak in question during crit-session about it. Mixing theoretical and practical work has proven to be a very efficient learning process, at least for me.
