Building a stepping stool and video prototyping session

Today was a busy day, ended the workshop tour and exercise by getting to know more tools and finishing the stepping stool from last week. I’m pleased by the visual design of it, but it performed badly in the functionality test (the legs broke off). I’m certain that with a little more time on the engineering part the stool should hold a normal person. Some kind of balance is always important when designing something. We tried to think a little bit different and challenge the usual design by doing it a bit differently with sacrificing structural integrity as a result. So a note for the future would be to balance different areas out more evenly and ultimately achieve the clients demand for the design.

The evening was reserved for video prototyping. As the whole university’s WiFi was down, we couldn’t print out the necessary images for our “flex-Device”. We tried to print it via an USB-stick with no success, as a little remainder one truly appreciate devices that actually CAN work without any WiFi access.

We had no choice than to use the time to do some kind of a arts and crafts. As we were cutting and gluing the screen together we actually got some time to try out the prototype for the first time. As we did it we realized there has to be at least 2 more scenes in the video to connect the logic of the situation. Somehow using the prototype albeit in a very crude form got us thinking about the logic of it. A sort of prototyping-sense was created to it in understanding, as I was holding it physically. Something I couldn’t imagine or think of before I had the prototype.
